Thanks for a good summary of the problem. Let me also make it clear that I also prefer
to see that a model converges and the covariance step completes. But the absence of these
features does not make the model results bad.
I agree with you that it is not uncommon to find a model that makes biological sense failing
to converge while some empirical function allows NONMEM to run the convergence step.
I prefer biology over empiricism. So today I more or less ignore NONMEM's diagnosis of "success"
and prefer to judge a model on its performance e.g. with a predictive check.
