Nick,
Toss a coin is an interesting analogy. Tom Ludden and I presented
some results at the ECPAG meeting where we randomly sequenced the
subjects in the data set - same data, same compiler etc. About half
converged successfully, about half didn't. Basically a very slow
random number generator.
