Nick and Andreas: I do not have an appropriate windows network drive available for testing, but I think I know what is going on. On Windows, when mpiexec is loaded and begins executing through the call to nmmpi.bat, which is right after the statement > Starting MPI version of nonmem execution ... mpiexec takes control of all ports, including those established for WIndows network drives. Therefore during that time, the host computer cannot communicate with the file system on remote systems. This does not happen with Linux NFS file systems. Unfortunately this is a limitation of MPICH2 itself. The manager computer must therefore foot-print itself on a local drive. Once mpiexec exits, then network file systems are re-established. Bob, Thanks for this explanation. Its hard to think that MPICH developers would not have come across this problem. Surely there are other people in the world who use Windows and data on network drives for parallel processing problems? Have you been in touch with MPICH to see if they are aware of the problem and perhaps might have a work around? It is just the pnm file that needs to be somewhere on the local drive? Bob, It worked for me too. Just adding -mapall option to the mpiexec and wdir lines fixes the problem. Thanks for reading the MPICH documentation for us :-) Nick

Dear Bob, I was hopeful when I saw your post with the "-mapall" fix that I'd be able to resolve the MPI issues I've been having with NM7.2 on a Vista 64-bit OS machine. After following Rik's advice and getting the proper 64-bit version, I can run computername.exe from a local hard disk: C:\>cd \nm72 C:\nm72>mpiexec -mapall -n 1 -host localhost computername.exe USWA271718 However, that same command fails when run from a mapped network directory: C:\nm72>H: H:\Project - 151\NONMEM\151 MAD PKPD>mpiexec -mapall -n 1 -host localhost computername.exe launch failed: CreateProcess(computername.exe) on 'USWA271718.am.corp.amgen.com' failed, error 193 - (null) Is there any other information that I can send that would help run this issue down? To be clear, I can execute complex BAYES regression problems providing they reside on local disks. Regards, Mike

For example, 1:mpiexec -mapall -wdir "%cd%" -hosts 1 localhost 1 nonmem.exe %* 2-[nodes]:-mapall -wdir "%cd%\worker{#-1}" -hosts 1 localhost 1 nonmem.exe Robert J.
