Test Installation of MPICH2 64-bit for NONMEM 7.2.0 and gfortran 4.6.3 64-bit on Windows 7 64-bit
The following is a description and output listing of an installation of MPICH2
64-bit 1.4.1p1 from Argonne National Laboratory for use with NONMEM 7.2.0 and
gfortran 4.6.3 64-bit on Windows 7 64-bit (Home Premium with Service Pack 1).
This implementation was installed on single dual processor systems. Additional
installation instructions are necessary for networked multiple system
implementations. Because this is a test procedure with an "n" of 2 (one Intel
and one AMD dual processor system), any additional information that can be
provided by user experience with the procedure is welcome. Please email your
comments directly to [email protected].
NOTE: Administrative privileges are required for some installation steps and is
recommended.
1. Download the MPICH2 64-bit installer, mpich2-1.4.1p1-win-x86-64.msi, and
these test files: foce_parallel.ctl, example1.csv and mpiwini2.pnm from
ftp://ftp.globomaxnm.com/Public/nonmem720/.
2. Disable or remove any 32-bit implementations of MPICH2 if previously
installed but DO NOT remove the "mpi" folder of your 64-bit NONMEM installation.
3. Double-click the Windows installer file, mpich2-1.4.1p1-win-x86-64.msi, to
launch the installer. The "Welcome to the MPICH2 64-bit Setup" screen will be
displayed. Click "Next>" to continue.
4. The "MPICH2 64-bit Information" screen will be displayed. This screen
contains information that may be helpful to the user for installation on
networked systems. Click "Next>" to continue.
5. The "License Agreement" screen will be displayed. Click the "I agree" radio
button and the "Next>" button to continue.
6. The "Process Manger Setup" screen will be displayed. NOTE: Administrative
privileges are required to install the smpd process. The default passphrase
"behappy" was accepted. Click "Next>" to continue.
7. The "Select Installation Folder" screen was displayed. The default folder,
C:\Program Files\MPICH2\, was accepted. To "Install MPICH2 64-bit for yourself
or for anyone who uses this computer", you must select either the "Everyone" or
"Just me" radio button. Click "Next>" to continue.
8. The "Confirm Installation" screen is displayed. Click "Next>" to continue.
9. The "Installing MPICH2 64-bit" screen is displayed and a DOS window running
smpd.exe is displayed. Next, a "Windows Security Alert" screen is displayed
warning the user that "Windows Firewall has blocked some features of this
program." and displays the following information:
Name: smpd.exe
Publisher: Unknown
Path: C:\program files\mpich2\bin\smpd.exe
Check the box for "Private networks, such as my home or work
network" and click the "Allow access" button to continue.
10. The "Installation Complete" screen is displayed noting that MPICH2 64-bit
has been successfully installed. Click "Close" to exit the installer.
11. Rename or delete the libfmpich2g.a file found in the
C:\nm72gf64\mpi\mpi_wing\ directory (if C:\nm72gf64\ is your NONMEM 7.2.0
installation directory).
12. Copy the libfmpich2g.a file found in the C:\Program Files\MPICH2\lib\
directory to your C:\nm72gf64\mpi\mpi_wing\ directory.
13. Add C:\Program Files\MPICH2\bin to the system PATH environment variable
using the Windows 7 Control Panel.
14. Open a DOS window and run the following command: "mpiexec -register". A
Windows Security Alert screen is displayed warning the user that "Windows
Firewall has blocked some features of this program." and displays the following
information:

Publisher: Unknown
Path: C:\program files\mpich2\bin\mpiexec.exe
Check the box for "Private networks, such as my home or work
network" and click the "Allow access" button to continue.
15. Complete the account (domain\user) and password information required by the
"mpiexec -register" window. The command will respond with "Password encrypted
into the Registry". The DOS window may now be closed.
16. A test of MPI parallelization on a dual processor system was made using the
foce_parallel.ctl control file and example1.csv data file using the
mpiwini2.pnm parafile (specifying two nodes). The three files were copied to
the "run" directory of the NONMEM installation and run with nmfe72.bat. Output
is listed below.
