My experience on Alpha and x86 machines tells me that g77 is slower than any other compiler in the market. On points 1 and 5. My experience with well set up Windows NT 4 and Linux (RedHat 6.1) machines is that you don't find real differences on uptime among systems. It is a question of doing a good job on the system you have and knowing the systems deeply enough for the task.
