Dear PhD students,
The Pharmacometrics and PKPD Research Groups at Uppsala University are happy to
invite PhD students from all around the world to the 11th Uppsala
Pharmacometrics Summer School (UPSS).
Dates: August 14th-25th, 2023
Place: Uppsala, Sweden
Intended for: PhD students (at the time of the Summer School).
Topics: The first week will focus on covariate model building, the second week
on PKPD modelling of continuous and categorical data in NONMEM 7.
Program: Lectures, hands-on sessions, student group work, and student
presentations.
Instructors: Mats O. Karlsson, Lena Friberg, Andrew Hooker and colleagues.
Prerequisites:
1) Previous experience with the NONMEM software.
2) Students will be asked to submit an abstract of an analysis problem they are
currently working on or planning to start in the near future.
3) Students will also be required to present a poster based on this abstract.
Group work examples: During each course week, two days will be devoted to
working with real data examples brought by the participants. This has been an
appreciated component, both by the students that have brought the examples and
the other group members who get to expand their hands-on experience. For the
purpose of these exercises, we ask applicants if they have examples with data
that can be used and thus temporarily shared with fellow students in the group.
Fee: Free of charge (transport, accommodation, and food are not included).
Traveling grant: Pharmacometrics Africa has provided traveling grants that can
be applied for by students from African universities. Pharmetheus and Novartis
traveling grants covers travelling costs for PhD students enrolled at
universities in developing countries. You can apply for these grants in the
summer school application form (posted below).
Maximum number of participants: 30
Please apply here: https://doit.medfarm.uu.se/bin/kurt3/kurt/84631
Application deadline: March 24th, 2023

Dear Mats Karlsson,
Whilst training anyone on technical levels is praiseworthy, I'd
strongly recommend you to stress on instruction in another dimension: *ethical
conduct*, in particular at conferences and international organisations.
Speaking from experience, I would've greatly appreciated if you and your
group had been attentive to ethics in the past. In particular, I sincerely
hope you could've had the decency to respect fair play and meritocracy.
Great leadership, all in all, is about influence without authority, about
the utmost devotion to authenticity and ethics.
Please think twice or even thrice about my words.
Best regards,
Shan
