Can any offer an original source reference for this well used phrase? "Pharmacokinetics is what the body does to the drug. Pharmacodynamics is what the drug does to the body" Thanks, Nick -- Nick Holford, Dept Pharmacology & Clinical Pharmacology University of Auckland, 85 Park Rd, Private Bag 92019, Auckland, New Zealand [EMAIL PROTECTED] tel:+64(9)923-6730 fax:+64(9)373-7090 http://www.fmhs.auckland.ac.nz/sms/pharmacology/holford
Hi! Might be F.H. Dost. Grundlagen der Pharmakokinetik. 2. Ed., Georg Thieme Verlag, Stuttgart, 1968: "Unter Pharmakokinetik versteht man die Lehre von der quantitativen Auseinandersetzung zwischen Organismus und einverleibtem Pharmakon, sonst nichts." citing as the source: Bateman, H. Thanks to all those who responded. I do think that I was the first to publish those definitions, and I have now found it in two of my chapter publications in 1984. However, the most relevant is my single authored Chapter entitled, "Pharmacokinetics: Basic Principles and Its Use as a Tool in Drug Metabolism", which begins "Pharmacokinetics may be simply defined as what the body does to the drug, as opposed to pharmacodynamics which may be defined as what the drug does to the body" p 199 in Drug Metabolism and Drug Toxicity, JR Mitchell and MG Horning eds., Raven Press, New York, 1984. This is the most relevant because the book resulted from an ASPET Workshop titled the same as the book that was held October 9-12, 1980 in Houston. My talk was on October 9. By the way, I keep a record of the titles of all the slides that I present. I see no prior reference to that definition of pharmacokinetics before that talk. And at least for me, I can really pinpoint that the definition above was created in early October 1980, because on October 2 at the First North American Conference on the Effects of Disease States on Clinical Pharmacokinetics in Vancouver, BC, my slide used the more conventional definition of pharmacokinetics, "Pharmacokinetics is the study of the kinetics of absorption, distribution, metabolism and excretion of drugs, and their corresponding pharmacologic, therapeutic and toxic response in man and animals." I think the we should recognize this as another of the many contributions Les Benet has made to PKPD. The original phrase is: "Pharmacokinetics may be simply defined as what the body does to the drug, as opposed to pharmacodynamics which may be defined as what the drug does to the body" and the official reference: Benet LZ, "Pharmacokinetics: Basic Principles and Its Use as a Tool in Drug Metabolism", p 199 in Drug Metabolism and Drug Toxicity, JR Mitchell and MG Horning eds., Raven Press, New York, 1984. The book is partially available on Google Books. http://books.google.co.nz/books?lr=&ei=7fcVSZ-dD43gtgPA8d2DDA&id=Pf5sAAAAMAAJ&dq=Drug+Metabolism+and+Drug+Toxicity%2C+JR+Mitchell+and+MG+Horning+eds.%2C+Raven+Press%2C+New+York%2C+1984.&q=benet&pgis=1 But unfortunately it seems that the chapter written by Les has not been digitized. Drug Metabolism and Drug Toxicity: [based on Workshop on Drug Metabolism and Drug Toxicity held Oct. 1980, at the Baylor College of Medicine] By Jerry R. Mitchell, Marjorie G.
