But g77 is still available with Ubuntu Gutsy Gibbon. I tested it myself just the other day.

That's exactly the point, Gutsy Gibbon is Ubuntu 7.10, an older version.
Ubuntu 8.10 (Intrepid Ibex) is the current version. g77 is going away
and Linux (and NONMEM) are moving in the direction of g95.
