PhD position at Leiden University

At the Leiden Academic Centre for Drug Research of Leiden University, we are looking for a PhD candidate in Pediatric Clinical Pharmacology. Key responsibilities Neonatal sepsis is one of the main causes of death in babies born too early and many newborns do not recover from sepsis despite adequate antibiotic treatment. You will study different relevant aspects of neonatal sepsis by using population pharmacokinetic/-dynamic modelling and statistical approaches. You will analyze clinical data, such as inflammatory biomarkers, heart rate, body temperature and metabolomic profiles as well as data of a clinical trial on pentoxifylline, a new drug candidate for the treatment of neonatal sepsis. Our aim will be to increase the understanding of neonatal sepsis through computational modelling and to use this knowledge to improve treatment. This position will be in Leiden but the research will be executed in close cooperation with the Erasmus MC Sophia Children’s Hospital, Rotterdam. Selection criteria •Master degree in pharmacy, (bio)pharmaceutical sciences, (bio)medical sciences or a related discipline; •Experience with quantitative pharmacokinetic-pharmacodynamic concepts and/or computational pharmacology; •Experience and/or affinity with data analysis, biostatistics and clinical trials ; •Experience with modelling software, such as R, NONMEM or SimCYP, is a plus; •Excellent (verbal and written) communication skills in English; •Interested in participating in educational tasks (~20% of the contracted hours); •An independent and creative team player. Terms and conditions We offer a full-time one year term position, after a positive evaluation of the progress of the thesis, personal capabilities and compatibility the appointment, the position will be extended by a further four years. Salary range from €2,325.- to €2,972.- gross per month (pay scale P, in accordance with the Collective Labour Agreement for Dutch Universities).
