Postdoc Mathematical Pharmacology The Leiden Academic Centre for Drug Research (LACDR) and AstraZeneca (AZ), vacancy 15-169 The Leiden Academic Centre for Drug Research (LACDR) and AstraZeneca (AZ) are looking for a: Postdoc Mathematical Pharmacology (0.8 - 1.0 fte) Vacancy number: 15 -169 Project description LACDR and AZ have recently established a collaboration to develop novel mechanistic PKPD models to describe, understand and predict regulatory feedback mechanisms. Such models should have broad application in translational drug discovery and development across therapeutics areas and should provide a novel framework to optimize dosing schedules based on mechanistic understanding of regulatory feedback mechanisms such as tolerance and rebound. We are therefore looking to appoint a postdoc Mathematical Pharmacology. The emphasis of the position is on research, but it is our philosophy that our students get taught by our best researchers. It is therefore expected that every member of staff spend *20% of their time on teaching duties. Selection criteria The ideal candidate for this unique position will have a PhD in Mathematics, Engineering, Physics or a related discipline and will combine excellent quantitative skills with a strong desire to apply computational approaches in drug discovery and development and biomedical research. About our organization The Leiden Academic Centre for Drug Research (LACDR) is a leading institute dedicated to world-class research and education in drug discovery and development. LACDR comprises a diverse and international team of approximately150 researchers and is ideally located at the Leiden Bio Science Park, the largest life science cluster in The Netherlands. In the 2015 QS World University Ranking, the University of Leiden was listed number 9 globally in the area of Pharmacy and Pharmacology. LACDR has a world-leading reputation in the field of mechanism-based pharmacokinetic-pharmacodynamic (PKPD) modelling and a growing focus on using computational approaches in the areas of drug research, such as pharmacometabolomics, medicinal chemistry and toxicology. AstraZeneca (AZ) is a leading multi-national R&D based biopharmaceutical company and employs 9,000 R&D people world-wide developing medicines for diabetes, obesity, arthritis, central nervous system and pain, oncology and infection. The Drug Metabolism and Pharmacokinetics (DMPK) department supports aspects of drug distribution and metabolism and human dose predictions for drug R&D projects, including those in clinical development. Within DMPK sit Modelling and Simulation (M&S) groups associated with each therapy area, supporting the discovery and development of therapeutic agents. These groups collaborate via the Centre of Excellence (CoE) on training, software, modelling methods and scientific collaborations. Research within AZ is partly funded internally, including PhD studentships and Postdoc Fellowships (currently numbering 75 with an aim to double this in the next two years) who spend time at AZ and at partner universities. Terms and conditions We offer a position for an initial period of one year with an extension of up to two additional years subject to performance. Pay scale 10 or 11, in accordance with the Collective Labour Agreement for Dutch Universities. We aim to employ more women in areas where they are underrepresented. Women are therefore especially invited to apply. An appointment at Leiden University includes a pension build-up and other benefits; these include an annual holiday premium of 8%, an end-of-year premium of 8.3% and a paid parental leave of 62,5%. There are excellent options for child day care in the near working area. Leiden University strongly believes that innovation requires a diverse organization and workforce. Women are strongly encouraged to apply. Candidates from outside the Netherlands may be eligible for a substantial tax break. The candidate will be collaborating closely with scientists at AstraZeneca and will be given the opportunity to travel to AZ research sites for working visits. Located only 30 minutes from Amsterdam Schiphol Airport, Leiden is ideally situated for international travel.
