Peter and nmusers: If I had the $INPUT and $DATA records and the complete data set, and could reproduce the error, I would try subsets of the data file. Would the crash (in Fortran I/O routines) happen if only the first record was present (NRECS=1)? If that was ok, I'd try the first 100, first 200, etc. It could be that there is something wrong in only one record. Peter, if this approach does not help, feel free to send me the above and I'll take a look.
