Phil,
Likely you need to add the path to the compiler to you environment
variable PATH, from control panel (Start..Setting..Control panel) click on
the "System" icon. Click on "Advanced", then "Environment variables". You
can add the path to either the system PATH environment variable or the
user PATH environment variable, mine is in the system PATH
for my installation it is:
C:\Fortran Compiler\DF98\BIN
you'll also need
;C:\Fortran Compiler\Common\MSDEV98\BIN\;C:\Fortran
Compiler\VC98\BIN\;C:\Fortran Compiler\Common\TOOLS\
to get the libraries and the link command.
I think that you may have had the option at installation to have the
installation script append this to your path.
The reason it works in the Fortran MSDOS windows is that that window sets
the local PATH environment variable when it opens.
It won't work to just install the NM file from the Fortran command prompt
NMFE5 needs this path every time it runs.
